The SARC Multidisciplinary Tumor Board (SMTB) provides innovative multidisciplinary discussion for adults and children with sarcoma at any stage of the disease.
The Tumor Board meets the 2nd Friday of every month at 12 pm CT.
For physicians: Submit Case
As the care of patients with cancer becomes increasingly complex and therapeutic options become more nuanced, the input of providers from different aspects of the care spectrum is more critical than ever for optimal decision making for patients. The SMTB provides a forum where a team of experts from a wide range of specialties meet for in-depth, evidence-based discussion of tumor diagnosis and management. Our monthly sarcoma tumor board meeting involves physicians specializing in sarcoma from surgical oncology, orthopedic oncology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, pediatric oncology, pathology, and radiology.
All sarcoma patient cases discussed at the SMTB are recorded and are available for future educational reference.
Patient cases may be presented by the physician at any step along the cancer journey: before any diagnostic procedure, before initial biopsy, before primary surgery, after primary surgery, at relapse, and/or in case of possible inclusion in a clinical trial. The board will have a secure portal through which the physician can submit an intake form describing the case, treatment so far, and what clinical question they wish to discuss.
Dr. D’Amato is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami, where she serves as a sarcoma medical oncologist, assistant director of clinical research, and medical director of the Comprehensive Treatment Unit. In addition to her clinical service, she is also involved in clinical trials for GIST and other sarcomas and is co-director of the oncology pathway in a newly implemented curriculum for the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
Dr. Scott Okuno is Professor of Oncology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He is a recognized expert in sarcoma and clinical research. Dr. Okuno has been the SARC Medical Officer since 2012. Dr. Okuno was appointed SARC Chief Medical Officer in September 2022, and he joined the SARC Board of Directors in October 2022.
SMTB will meet at regularly scheduled multidisciplinary virtual conferences to prospectively review individual sarcoma patients and discuss best management, keeping in mind that individual physicians are responsible for making the ultimate treatment decision.
The value of SMTB is that it brings together many sarcoma experts across many institutions to discuss cases and provide insights that a single institutional tumor board would not be able to.
Individual physicians are responsible for making the request for the SMTB. Cases will be presented virtually by the submitting provider. Once you have submitted the form, the SMTB coordinator will schedule the case.
Only physicians may submit a case request. If you are a patient or caregiver, please contact your sarcoma physician and share this page.
100% of SARC donations go directly to support program initiatives. The SARC Multidisciplinary Tumor Board provides physicians with multiple perspectives and expertise to help them develop the best treatment plan for their patients. Help us continue this program.
