Chapter 7: Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors (GIST)

GIST is one of the most common types of sarcoma. It appears to arise from the interstitial cells of Cajal (or its precursors), which are the pacemaker cells of the intestines. In other words, they are responsible for the “peristaltic wave” that pushes food through the intestines. GIST can occur anywhere in the gastrointestinal tract. The common places that GIST recur are in the abdominal cavity or in the liver.

Common anatomical locations
GIST can occur anywhere in the gastrointestinal tract; however, approximately 54% of all GISTs arise in the stomach, 30% in the small bowel (including the duodenum), 5% in the colon and rectum, and about 1% in the esophagus.

Pathology comment
Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) is a mesenchymal neoplasm with variable behavior, characterized by differentiation towards the interstitial cells of Cajal.
