SARC Teams Up to “Smash Out Sarcoma” August 27, 2025 A new campaign is utilizing the fast-growing sport of pickleball to raise awareness about sarcoma, a rare and often overlooked form of cancer. The initiative, titled “Smash Out Sarcoma,” is a partnership between USA Pickleball and a coalition of sarcoma advocacy organizations. Jamie Elliott, a pickleball champion, USA Pickleball Ambassador, and survivor of dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma, inspired the campaign. Jamie credits her early detection with saving her life. “If my chondrosarcoma had not been detected early, I probably would not be here today,” Jamie said. Her story and unstoppable spirit have fueled a national effort to raise awareness among players and fans about the warning signs of sarcoma, such as persistent pain, swelling, or restricted mobility, as well as the importance of seeking timely medical care. Throughout Sarcoma Awareness Month in July, USA Pickleball highlighted Jamie’s journey across its newsletters, website, and social media platforms. Plans are also underway to enhance visibility through tournament advertisements, video board public service announcements, and community engagement events at regional and national competitions. Several Patient Advocacy Groups, along with patients, families, and caregivers, have expressed interest in participating in the task force, including NORD, SARC, SFA, the Sarcoma Coalition, the Haystack Project, and the Task Force on Rare Diseases. This collaborative group has launched a new website, Smashing Sarcoma. SARC is proud to support this initiative by bringing clinical insight and research expertise to the forefront of this public-facing campaign. As part of this effort, patients and families are invited to share their stories, and organizations are encouraged to help promote and distribute campaign content. This campaign serves as a reminder that awareness saves lives and that sometimes changing the game can be as simple as picking up a paddle.
